Two-Lined Spittlebug (TLSB) Field Associate

We are looking to fill two Two-Lined Spittlebug (TLSB) Field Associate positions on the west side of Hawaiʻi Island. These positions will work with the CTAHR TLSB team in Kona. Field associates will be engaged in the fight against TLSB, an existential threat to Hawaiʻi’s paniolo heritage and cattle industry. Work will include TLSB research and control. We are seeking individuals that work well with others and are ready to communicate and engage with affected landowners to support them in their efforts. Because this work will take place on ranches, candidates with ranching experience are encouraged to apply!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assists in conducting surveys for TLSB
  • Assists technical staff with forming a response measure and communicating with landowners/managers
  • Collects and enters experimental data
  • Keeps appropriate record of activities
  • Assists with extension and research activities including  preparation of extension materials (e.g., documents, flyers, and other materials)

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • 1-3 years experience working in an agriculture or natural resources related position
  • Basic knowledge of Hawaiian biota/natural history and threats from invasive species in Hawai’i
  • Knowledge of field activities relating to natural resources management/integrated pest management.
  • Knowledge of common introduced insect species in Hawai‘i. 
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Able to keep complete and accurate records
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Able to work in rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions
  • Able to backpack and lift up to 40 pounds, unassisted

Pay is $3,788/month with paid holidays, sick time, and benefits.⁠ ⁠This is a 12 month position with potential for extension depending on future funding.
