Description: Evergreen shrub to small tree that can grow 6′-20’tall with grey to white bark.
Leaves: Leaves are long and slender and wider at the tip. They have a leathery texture and serrated edges. These olive green leaves have a spicy fragrance.
Flower: Small fragrant flowers.
Fruit: Round fruit is covered with a wax coating. Eaten and dispersed by birds.
Impact: Spreads by birds and runners. Its roots contain a fungus that fixes nitrogen faster than most legumes. Normally nitrogen fixing plants are helpful, but that’s not the case in native forests. Native plants are specially adapted to grow in nitrogen poor soils so adding nitrogen will cause the invasive plants to grow faster than the native ones. This plant is also a fire hazard.
