Tools and Navigation

How do I change pages on the app?
Change the page you are on by clicking the name of the page in the app header.

What do the square white buttons on the map do?
The square white buttons on the map are to interact with the map itself. Some buttons may not be on all maps, but if the button is there it always does the same thing. Hover over the icon to see its name.
SEARCH- Look up an address, or move the map to show your current location. Location may not be accurate using a computer since it’s using your internet address to guess your location.

LAYERS- This is a list of all the layers available in the map. Currently visible layers have an eye next to the layer name. Hidden layers will have a marked-through eye. You can click on the eye to show or hide layers. You can also check the legend tab to see the symbology for each layer.

BASEMAPS- Change the underlying basemap. There are a bunch of options, although I recommend sticking with darker basemaps since the symbology is set up to use with imagery.

MEASURE- Can measure line distance or area. If you hover over a point the start or end of the line can magnet/snap to the point so you can measure more accurately.

SELECT- There are several ways to select features (click the dropdown arrow). You need to select features in order to edit them.

UNSELECT- Once you don’t need the features selected click this to clear the selection.

FULLSCREEN- Click this to make the map fullscreen. Click the same button again to shrink the map back to regular. You can also press F11 (windows) or ctrl-cmmd-F (mac) to make the app fullscreen. ZOOM BUTTONS- At the bottom right there are + and – buttons. These zoom the map in or out if you’re not able to zoom by scrolling.

SELECTED FEATURES- This is a count of how many features you have selected. Sometimes if you select things you might select multiple items accidentally, so you can check this to verify you only have one feature selected. You can also count things by selecting them and then checking the count. It’s the count for features in all layers so you may need to turn other layers off to do that.

What do the round buttons on the map do?
The round buttons on the map are slightly different sets on each page. If the icon is the same they do basically the same thing, adjusted for each map. Hover over the icon to see the name of each button. Here are general descriptions.

TIMELINE- Click on this and then the play button in the middle to see an animated timeline of CRB detections. Click on the button again to hide the button (if you haven’t paused the playback it will continue). If you want to continue to see all the points click on the info button on the timeline popup, and turn off ‘Timeline filtering applied’.

MAP LAYERS- This has a list of the layers in the map as well as the legends for each layer. You can usually turn the layers on and off by clicking the checkbox next to the name which is useful because most maps have extra layers that may be useful- for example, trap locations on the detections map.

FILTER DATA- This will allow you to filter layers by different attributes. Some of the other buttons also allow you to filter data- I usually try to just do it using the filter button so I don’t forget to turn off a filter. If you want more options added to the filters email me (kris.meehan@hawaii.edu) and I can add them.

VIEW TABLE- This will show various tables of data in the map. Let me know if you would like more or different tables. You can generally edit the information in the table if you prefer doing it that way rather than clicking a feature and using the edit button.

PRINT- This will let you print out a map of the current map, with the features and zoom level you currently have. You can print a map with the legend, scalebar, etc. or just a picture showing the map image. Please don’t print any maps that might be publicly released without checking with me first! I will happily make you a better-looking map that won’t show private information.

EDIT- You can use this to create more features, or edit existing ones (in editable layers). Only visible layers can be added to or edited. If you want to edit a feature, remember to select it first.

FIND LOCATION- This is mostly if you need to convert an address to xy coordinates (or the reverse) for some reason. If you have an address it’s easier to use the square map search button. If the map search can’t find an address, I usually fall back to google maps or the authority, the County TMK Search (you can also search using a map and look up ownership info).

One of the maps is confusing or annoying!
Some of the maps are mostly intended to be used in the field when your map only shows a couple of parcels so it’s like a bag of confetti at bigger scales. If you have ideas for better symbology for any of the maps email me- I’m happy to change layout or labelling so they work better for people. You can turn off layers in using the round layer button if you’re not using them which will help.

The app is acting weird!
If things aren’t acting like you’re used to, there are a few possible fixes:

-Move the map frame around so the features have to reload and redraw

-Check the filters (and timeline if it’s on that page) to make sure nothing is filtering out the data you want

-Refresh the whole app by pressing F5 or whatever the refresh button is on your browser (you will lose edits you haven’t saved)

-Intermittent edit widget issues (esp with reports) can happen for mystery reasons. Here’s a workaround until I hear back about the bug report.
If the report is selected, but when you click the edit button it doesn’t load the record, leave the widget open and go to the top left of the map.
Next to the magnifying glass there’s an icon that looks like a stack of squares (Layers). Click that, then put your mouse cursor over BIISC_CRB_Reports.
At the right side of that list item there will be a little eye icon (you won’t see it until you have your mouse over that layer name).
Click on the eye to turn off the layer, wait like a second, and then click it again to turn it back on. Your record should load up and you can edit it.

-If none of those have helped there might have been a change or bug that messed things up. Email me with as much info as you have and I’ll figure out the issue and try to give you a workaround for right now.

Detections

How do I look at info about a CRB detection?
The easiest way is to look at the list on the left side of the screen. The detections are sorted with the newest at the top. Scroll down to find older detections.

To select a detection, click on the card. It will turn white, and the map will zoom to the location and open a pop-up with more info. If there are pictures they are at the end of the popup.

To unselect the detection, click the card again. The card will turn back to gray.

ABOUT LISTS- You can click the filter at the top of the list to limit the list to recent detections. If you have the filter active there will be a dot next to the funnel icon. To remove the filter click the button again and then click cancel on the popup. You can also search the list to find phrases in the notes or names of people, etc. The other buttons at the top of the list refresh the list (like if you’ve just added a new detection and want to see it) or open more options. That icon with 4 circles always means data options- I would recommend not adding filters here because it’s easy to forget about them.

How do I add a CRB detection from a community report?

Use the Add Detection From Report tool
Go to the Public Reports page of the web app, and click on the report in the list to select it.
With the report selected, click the last button in the vertical toolbar on the right (looks like a notebook with a checkbox, called Add Detection from Report).
That will open up a field with a survey form. Any info from the report will be passed over, and there are a few extra fields (age/sex/count etc) for you to fill out based on the info/picture in the report.
Drag the picture from the report (assuming it’s of a CRB) over onto the add photo box in the survey and it will add it to the detection too.
Scroll all the way down and hit submit. The detection will show up in the detections list/map immediately. Remember that the detection list is by detection date, so if it’s a report from a few days ago you may have to scroll down to find it.

How do I add a new CRB detection from a submitted community trap check?

Verify the trap check
If somebody submits a positive trap check from a community trap, don’t enter the detection separately. You just need to verify the trap check.
Positive trap checks from people logged into AGOL accounts are automatically added because I assume anyone in that group can ID a CRB.
Anonymous users have to have their detection marked as verified before it gets automatically added.
You can do this in the field or at a computer and either way will have the same result- if you mark the detection as valid it will be automatically added to the list within about 20 minutes. If you leave it blank or mark it as invalid it won’t get added.
Field Maps: Use the CRB regular trap checks form.
Select the trap, then tap the link symbol to see all the trap checks. Tap the trap check you need to verify, then the pencil icon at the bottom to edit the check. Scroll to the end of the check form. For positive trap checks there will be a new section called Verified. Change the value from empty to Yes (or No if you want) and save the edits.
Web App: This is the easy way to do it. Go to the Community Traps page of the web app, and then to the Trap Checks list. Click on the trap check you want to verify. You can just ignore the popup and instead click the “Verify Trap Check” button in the vertical toolbar.
A window will open with the trap check you selected. Double check that it’s the right trap check (trap number and date match etc) and then scroll to the end of the form. Change the Verified field value to Yes, and click to update the form. Like the other automatic adds, it might take about 20 minutes to show up in the detections list. If the Verified field says Added, that means someone already verified it and it’s in the detections list so you don’t need to do anything.

How do I add a new CRB detection from a community trap check someone sent to me directly?

Submit or add a trap check record with the detection
If someone sends you info about a CRB detection in their trap, the easiest way to get things entered is to just fill out a trap check webform yourself (if the reporter has a new QR code on their trap, encourage them to use that in the future because it’s faster for everyone).
As long as you are logged in to AGOL when you submit the form you don’t need to validate the detection. You will probably have to update the Detection By field in the detection, since it’s really a community detection but you’re the one submitting the form so it will say BIISC.
Field Maps: Use the CRB regular trap checks form. Find and select the trap, then click the link icon and fill out a trap check form like normal with the info they gave you.
Web app: Go to the Community Traps page of the web app, and find the trap in the list (you can search by trap name or contact name). When the map zooms to the trap, make sure it is selected (has a glowing cyan outline)- you might have to click the symbol again to make sure.
With the trap selected, click the Edit Traps button in the vertical toolbar. Scroll to the end of the popup where the trap check records are, and add a new trap check. Fill out the form with the info they gave you, and if they sent a picture add it to the attachments if can.Click the button at the bottom to create the trap check record.

How do I add a new CRB detection (not from a report or trap check)?
The first step is to know where you’re going to put the point. If you only have an address or xy coordinates use the search or find location buttons to mark a point on the map first.

Next, make sure you don’t have any features selected, then click the edit button and choose to create a new CRB detection. It will tell you to click on the map to mark the location.

A pop-up form will open for editing, so fill that out. You can add photos as attachments. Remember to also fill out the tracking information section. If the CRB was found in the trap enter the trap name exactly as it is on the trap. Then click Create. The point should appear on the map immediately. If you don’t see if make sure there are not time or attribute filters excluding it- if the feature would not show on the map you’ll be able to create the new point but it will immediately disappear.

How do I update or add info to an existing CRB detection?
To edit an existing feature, select the feature by either clicking the list card or clicking on the point on the map. Usually I click on the list card because that way you won’t accidentally select multiple points (repeated detections in the same trap will have multiple points in the same place). Verify that the feature is selected- the symbol wil have a cyan outline and shading.

Once the correct feature is selected, click the edit button. The edit form will open, showing the existing information for that feature. After you finish making changes, click on update. The edits should be visible immediately.

How do I show or hide the detection labels?

The labels show based on the zoom level of the map. Close up maps will show the labels, so if you want to see them zoom in a little closer (or vice versa).

Community Traps

How do I look at traps and trap checks?
Traps and Trap Checks are in stacked lists on the left side of the page. Use the buttons/tabs at the bottom of the list to switch between them. If you select a record the info popup for the trap will show on the map, and if you select a trap the map will zoom to the location.

What do the colors on the trap checks mean?
Trap checks that don’t report CRB have a green dot, and checks that report CRB are red. It’s important to note that the trap checker may be wrong! Checks are sorted with the newest at the top.

How do I find a specific trap?
If you know the name of the trap, the easiest way to pull up the info is to go to the traps list, and type the name of the trap into the search bar. If there is a trap by that name it will return all the trap and check info. Note that if the trap has changed name, you need to search under the current name. The associated trap checks have the name of the trap at the time they were checked, so you can look at those to verify the old name.
If you only know address, you can type that into the map search and see what traps are in the area of the address.
If you only know where the trap is, it’s easiest to just pan to the area and click on traps until you find the one you want.

How do I look at full information about a trap check?
The easiest way is to click on the trap check in the list, which will open the pop-up info for the trap itself. Scroll down to the previous trap checks, and click the trap check to see all the info and a picture if they sent one. You can also click on a trap in the trap list and then open the trap check list- it will have all the checks for that trap.

How do I update a trap check?
To update a check select the trap by clicking on the trap check or clicking directly on the feature. Make sure the correct trap is selected.

The popup should load with the existing information for that trap. Scroll to the bottom of the popup where there is a section for CRBTrapChecks. Click on the check you want to edit. Then you can make changes or update the request status.

You might want to do this if the report involved a CRB, but it was some other beetle. Editing a check is also useful if the trap checker requested new lures, or for the trap to be moved. You can mark that you have responded to the request which will remove it from the list of traps that have requests.

How do I see which traps need follow-up actions?

Click the view table button, and select the list you need. Options include ‘not checked in past month’ which has traps that are late on checks,’traps not changed’ which has all traps where the last lure change is more than 3 months ago, and ‘trap requests’ where the trap check requested that we give them more lures or gave a new location for the trap. The tables are all sorted with the most out of date traps at the top.

The dates of last lure changes/checks or crb detections is pulled from the trap checks table-so if trap checks aren’t in the table the table won’t update. If you know there were lure changes or trap checks you can enter the date yourself in the table. That will remove the trap from the associated list. When checks for that trap are added in the future the table will update with new values like usual.

How do I see information about the traps as a group?

There is a small button on the middle left of the app (it’s usually beside the 3rd trap in the list). If you click that it will open a section with some trap stats- trap count, counts by which group is monitoring them or location, how many trap checks we’ve gotten and how many have been positive. I’m not sure these are 100% accurate because sometimes the traps get passed to different groups, but it is hopefully close. The dip in trap checks is probably because trap checks without CRB weren’t getting entered- not really a problem since they were still seen in the google sheet but this will hopefully improve with the new system.

Traps

How is this different than the community traps page?

This is the older traps page, and it has traps from all sources- our traps layer, the crb response layer, and the traps monitored via nrds. The last of these is why the app opens a popup to login to nrds when you open it. If you don’t log in to nrds everything will work fine but you won’t be able to see those traps. I am working on integrating the two pages but it’s not top priority. Changes you make on one page will show on the other.

Public Reports

How do I look at info about a report?
The easiest way is to look at the list on the left side of the screen. The reports are sorted with the newest at the top. Scroll down to find older detections.

To select a detection, click on the card. It will turn white, and the map will zoom to the location and open a pop-up with more info. If there are pictures they are at the beginning of the popup.

To unselect the detection, click the card again. The card will turn back to gray.

ABOUT LISTS- You can click the filter at the top of the list to limit the list by type of report and report status.

How do I add a new report?
The first step is to know where you’re going to put the point. If you only have an address or xy coordinates use the search or find location buttons to mark a point on the map first.

Next, make sure you don’t have any features selected, then click the edit button and choose to create a new report. It will tell you to click on the map to mark the location.

A pop-up form will open for editing; fill out as many fields as you’ve got info for. If you are already done handling the report you can mark the report close but otherwise set it as open (or new if you like).

How do I update or add info to an report?
To edit an existing feature, select the feature by either clicking the list card or clicking on the point on the map. Usually I click on the list card because that way you won’t accidentally select multiple points. Verify that the feature is selected- the symbol wil have a cyan outline and shading. When you select a point it will also bring it to the top of the report list.

Once the correct feature is selected, click the edit button. The edit form will open, showing the existing information for that feature. After you finish making changes, click on update. The edits should be visible immediately.

What are the possible report statuses?
Currently there are 6 possible statuses. If you need more or different ones let me know. Y’all are welcome to use these differently than I put below, so long as you all mean the same thing
New: reports from the web app have this automatically when they are submitted
Open: we’re still actively figuring what’s up with this report- we are not sure yet if the report is CRB-related or not
Closed- Monitoring: this is a plant damage report that we added to our ongoing monitoring, or sometimes I think Jade uses it to mean “almost certain this is not CRB but waiting on full confirmation”
Closed- Not CRB: this was prob a beetle or larva report that we have ruled out of being CRB. This is mostly its own status so I can make a map of how many non-CRB reports we get which might be useful to prove to people that think CRB have been here for years in Puna.
Closed- Positive CRB: We confirmed this is CRB, so the report has served its purpose. If there is a CRB report that turns out to be a CRB the location and info should be used to create a detection point. Closed: we’ve responded to the reporter and have no further interest in this point. Report was definitely not CRB, non-suspicious plant damage, or was incomplete/unuseful.

Can I edit or change status for multiple reports at once?
You can only select one report at a time. The fastest way to update reports is to click the view table button, and open the new (if there are any) and open reports tables. Drag the report_status column to the front of the table if it’s not already there. Then go down the rows updating the statuses and action taken (and BIISC notes if you want).

Is it possible to edit reports on a mobile device?
Right now you can open the app enough to view images on a mobile device but it’s hard to have the space to edit things. If you are interested in editing reports from your phone, let me know- there are a couple ways to do it.
