Lava Tree State Park – Albizia WorkDay 9am-1pm
Join your friends and neighbors for a celebration of Puna Resiliency! Start the day by helping us to control regrowth of albizia at the old “tree tunnel” area near Lava Tree State Park. We will be meeting at Lava Tree at 9am to prep and then working in groups to treat remaining stands of large trees as well as the smaller new growth growing up alongside the road.
Safety first! Please come ready to work in long plants, a long sleeved shirt, and sturdy, closed toe shoes that can handle challenging and uneven terrain. Bring a refillable water bottle and a sharpened hatchet, if you have one. We will be providing hatchets, gloves, and hardhats for all volunteers who need them. Plus a special gift for all volunteers.
From 3pm to 8pm, join BIISC at the Puna Resiliency Block Party on main street Pahoa! There will be live music, food, local crafts, and of course, plenty of information and education on hand. Interested in becoming an albizia assassin in your own neighborhood? Come by the booth to learn more about where we’ve been working and how you can be a part of building a resilient, albizia-free community. Volunteers from the morning event will enjoy a buy one, get one free slice of pizza from Boogie Woogie, so come out with us in the morning and work up an appetite!
