Description: Fast growing shrub. Very similar looking to other noxious weeds in the melatomaceae family. Some species have irregular scales on the branches.
Flower: Various sizes of purple flowers.
Leaves: Fuzzy with prominent longitudinal veins. Some species have thinner leaves and others have round broad leaves.
Fruit: Redish-purple fruit that splits open to release hundreds of tiny seeds. Also dispersed by birds.
Impacts: Spreads rapidly and forms monotypic thickets that outcompete and displace native plants. All melastoma are considered invasive.
