Description: Small to medium tree about 30′ tall.
Flower: Small yellow flowers with spikes about 8″ long.
Leaves: Simple alternating leaves that are about 1-2.5″ wide with a broad rounded base that tapers to a thin point. Long petioles (stem that connects to the branch) about 1-2″ long.
Fruit: 3-lobed capsule about 0.5″ wide. Turns brown when reaching maturity and opens up to reveal 3 dull white seeds that resemble popcorn.
Elevation: 0-6,000 feet
Impact: Long-lived trees can produce 100,000 seeds that are dispersed by birds yearly. Seeds can remain viable for up to 100 years. All parts of this plant are toxic.
Used in oil cultivation and may be imported for use in biofuel stock.
